there is this group of semi- free runners at my school who think they are top class. they like to show off at the area me and my buddies train by doing back flips and asking why we cant do them. kind of annoying but we ignore them most of the time.

we have been arguing the last couple of weeks though about proper rolling techniques. these guys have been doing backflips for a while, but other than that have very little parkour experience. these guys insist that when you want to roll out of a landing you have to turn sideways in midair, land sideways, then roll across your back.

obviously somthings wrong here, i understand emergencies call for improv but purposly putting all your force on your ankle and back is dangerous. + the possibility of smacking your elbow is very high.

well one kid learned the hard way. he is the kid that has been getting physically angry at me over me rolling out of small jumps (just training) or doing smaller jumps while they are dropping 10 + feet. well he went to jump off a roof friday, and did his sideways roll thing, and guess what happened?

his ankle snapped. he landed sideways i guess (i wasnt there, my freind was) and his ankle rolled, and just snapped.

i feel bad and i really hope there wasnt any permenant damage, but some people need to learn the hard way i guess.

i almost feel guilty though, yet at the same time i have that "i told you so" voice going in the back of my head lol.

thats it, just wanted to share.

Physically angry, as in threats??
Well, he'll have a few weeks to cool off and think about how he's treating his body.

Personally, I don't feel that much sympathy for someone who thinks they're better than everyone and then kills themselves. I don't see why someone would get mad for rolling out of a small jump, I mean, do you have to be restrictive on when you can do a roll. Come on give me a break. Anyway, I just hope that the guy learns a lesson/ is more open to other peoples ideas cause its always good to keep an open mind.

A good freind will help get you to the hospital. Your best freind will pick you up, dust you off and and ask you "Ready to try that again?"

nono. i just means he is actually getting angry. not just telling me im an idiot for doing what i do or whatever, he is actually glaring and grinding his teeth and getting red in the face.

whats funny is that no one in their group showed up today at lunch to show off lol.

i cant wait till one of them (especially if its the one with the broken ankle) shows up and asks me to teach him how to roll. ill do it, but im definatly going to be a D___K about it lol.

@ boyese - ya im not sure why, when they first showed up we were doing climbs up and over fences, we would drop then roll out of it. just roll training (my freind has a big problem with rolls) and ankle conditioning.
but they showed up and the one kid kept going on "Why are you rolling out of that? you dont need to. i dont need to."
i tried to explain to him that we were just training but he just ignored me and left. whatever lol.

this is just my thought. you don't you go up and ask the guys if you could teach them how to roll so they dont end up like their friend, if you wait for them to come and ask you then its like waiting for another accident to happen.

I practice my rolls from standing... I wonder what that guy would have to say to me. Anyway, getting your roll down perfectly can take years and when you do it on concrete, even the slightest variation can cause you to injure yourself.

Also, even from a small drop, a roll is often a smoother way to transition momentum back into your run.

Advice: Dont be a dick, dont rub it in their faces, just keep doing what you are doing, share with them what you know and in time the truth will become obvious.

Honestly, he's probably not going to recognize that improper rolling is what caused him to hurt himself. He's going to find a way to justify himself and so will his friends.

On a side note: There are many ways to roll beyond the forward shoulder roll. I practice diagonal and backwards rolls as well.

yaya. im really not going to be rude. the group hasnt showed up at all since friday so who knows whats going to happen. they probably expect me and my group to be rude lol.

yaya i know theres different rolls, especially in emergency situations (aka tripping, bad jump, ect.) and i am going to learn more of them soon, but i was just pointing out that his way was extremly wrong, and dangerous.
he puts his ankles, spine, and elbows at risk, even his head if hes not carefull.

I agree with lonnie, there'll be no need to be a total d---k about it, the kid was incompetent, full of it. But i do think you should talk to the group. Ya never know, he might not try to justify his actions.

All I can say is boys will be boys, and the "school dynamic" is way different than the "real world dynamic". In school, people are always trying to show off and be better than everyone else to get rep points. Once you get out into the real world, people realize (hopefully) after a couple years that skill is skill and you don't learn it by acting aloof and elite, you learn it by applying what you've learned from others in a productive way. Its a whole different ball of wax really.
All I can say is the kid got what he deserved for trying to bark like he had a pair without the proper techniques trained. Hence the "Epic Fail". He didn't bother to learn the right way to do it, and with Parkour/Freerunning, its really not something to take lightly. It can be very dangerous, its not something you can do overnight, and conditioning is needed to respect the way your body moves.

I guess in the simplest terms, if you resort to jack-assery, your @$$ gets jacked up.

RESPECT THE PARKOUR! RESPECT IT!

@ Lyekkah: What you said about the school dynamic is SO true. I wanted to say something about that but didn't know how to word it.

i second that opinion. (or third maybe? whatever)

even for myself, i think i train differently during lunches at school that any other time. at school i mostly am doing technical "showoffy" stuff, 360 vaults, reverse vaults, free running in general ect.
but when i am at my normal session places, im much more concernd about training than showing off. i dont usually have people watching me like school so i train very differently.

your hella right about that

Yeah I usually don't give a sh** about what people think at school so I always train as if they weren't there.

They are just show offs. Just cause you can do something doesnt mean you need to. Like sports players you dont see them carry around a ball and suddenly start playing when people are around, they just go out to have fun.

the AP's kind of hate us lol (they think we are going to hurt ourselves, and now they have evidence :(... ) so it would be hard, but maybe ill try anyway.
