The Basic Terms and Movements

Given the fact that there are countless scenarios for variations and no specific movements that must be done in any situation, there are a group of techniques that are commonly used and seen as more of the "basics" in our movement.
Here is some information on the common terminology and some visual guides courtesy of parkour.net and the Australian Parkour Association

These are meant to give you a general idea of the movement and terms. Go outside and try them yourself - drill them over and over. If you have any questions feel free to post up it the Techniques and Movements forum. Remember, the names are not important. It's about being able to get from point A to point B. Parkour is not a set of tricks or techniques. Parkour is a discipline of utility, progression, and durability. Now go train!


Roullade (ruhlawd - the 'u' like in ‘ruthless’) - roll



Saut de Chat (soh d' cha) - cat jump, cat pass, Kong, Monkey
literally 'jump of the cat / cat's jump'.



Saut de Bras (soh d' bra) - arm jump, cat-leap
literally 'jump of the arm / arm jump'.



Saut de Précision (soh'd presision) - Precision Jump



Tic Tac (tik tak) - Tic-Tac
to kick off one obstacle to get the height to jump over another.



Passe Muraille (pas moorai) - wall pass, wall hop, wall climb, pop vault



Laché (lahshay) - release



Saut de Fond (soh d' foh) - Drop, jump from height
literally 'jump to the ground / jump to the floor'. to jump down something.



Passement (passmoh) Vault
The general word for all kinds of vaults.


Saut de Détente (soh d' detoht) - Gap Jump, distance jump


Franchissement (fron-shee-smo) Under bar, jump through gap
literally 'break through'. To jump/swing through the gap between obstacles.


Planche (plonsh - though the n is nearly silent) - Muscle up


Demi Tour (deh-mee tour) - turn vault
literally 'half turn'.


Saut Aveugle (soh Ahveul) Blind Jump
to not see the landing area when you jump off the ground.


Equilibre (eq-we-lee-bray) Balance
any form of balance also includes handstands, headstands, etc.


Saut (soh) jump
to jump over an obstacle for example.
