I thought i'd share my personal feelings with you guys on this topic. I've noticed a lot of mixed opinions of this topic, and i hope to have an end with this posting.
Recently, MTV's "ultimate parkour challenge" has started a big controversey on whether this show is twisting the truth, or revealing it. I've noticed that some of you guys believe that parkour is what you want it to be, competition or no competition. It's funny because this is one of the only boundaries separating parkour from freerunning...
Truthfully, what was it that truly got into your mind and picked at it with the "ultimate parkour challenge"? I think it's because how wrong they portray parkour. As stated in other posts, they basically show the philosophy and throw in daredevil jackassery into this. I also believe that there isn't anything wrong with competition, but as how you compete. I mean, look at that show, they all care and cheer for each other, and i love that. People also saying things as "ohhh, you did a backflip, you are a freerunner" how old are we? Six??? Look at David Belles videos, i saw b-twists, backflips, and gainers in those videos. It helps through flow. Nothing wrong with flips in parkour.
Now i spent a few hours in my room mixing these thoughts together. Because believe it or not, i am in a freerunning group, as labeled, but i want to keep parkour pure. I came up with a simple solution: Don't put competition in parkour. Leave it into freerunning. I fully support the "keeping parkour pure" side, that is why i am a freerunner. I want to make a career through this, go into shows and such, like Tempest, even stuntman or such, possibly even go to the "Barclaycard's Freerunning championchip". But i respect parkour enough to keep it pure. To leave it's philosophy alone. So i switched my side to keep another pair of eyes from corrupting parkour. Are you afraid with what is going to happen? There is nothing wrong with freerunning! Please, keep parkour pure!
It took me a week to sum up the courage to post this, because i know how mixed our beliefs are. I am open to anyone's opinions. Just think about this, that's all i am hoping for.

Haha, yeah... Not to be rude, Taylor, but it seems like you're just feeding the flames. The post itself is working against your intentions.

parkour...free running...tracing...parkouring...ninja-ing...

whatever you wanna call it, call it that as long as your moving thas the main point.

no matter what, any activity is going to turn into a competiton...

look how sk8-ing, breakdancing, Drfting and martial arts all have fallen into the media grinder. They all started as hobbies by a smal # of people and now have turned into sub cultures

With everything, theres going to be pureists, those that live by the unwritten book...and theres gonna be those that are doing it for the "wrong" reasons.

but no matter how many sessions, and "this is what parkour is" vidoes you kick out ppl will always have thier own opinons and you cant chnages everyones opinions...so why bother, just do what you do and leave it at that

we have quite a few threads on this already... also good discussions on PKNA,
such as:
not a big fan of the 'just ignore it and concentrate on your own thing' attitude.

thats exactly what people who want to exploit things want you to do. because without opposition they are free to do as they wish.

this does not mean that you should spend all your time opposing whatever. you can still concentrate on doing good things for your local community. but you can also spend time doing something that influences the wider community as well and trys to ask for/find clarity in the goings on of people/organisations that are set up to market themselves and parkour on a mass scale.

however, has everyone seen this, it's been posted many times, the middle is the most interesting to me:

Sebastian Foucan is against competition as well, just an fyi. niether philosiphy supports the idea of competition. At this point though, I don't care what you call it, its essentially the same thing. Im gonna quit worrying about this and just go out and train.

i think without the crowds and the cameras those that participated in ulitmate parkour challenge wouldn't have tried to do a lot of the things that got a couple of them hurt. i don't think you can go through life trying to be better than anyone else. the only person you should strive to conquer, to compete with, is yourself. we are all born different. unless you have a clone of yourself to challenge its really kind of silly.
